What if it actually works out?

A few years ago, my friend said something to me that made me rethink how I was living my life.

He said, "Don't let your dreams die before you try."

That hit me hard because, at the time, I was a professional at talking myself out of chasing my dreams. I'd disqualify myself before taking my first step to avoid falling short of my expectations or embarrassing myself.

I've always dreamed of being a performing musician and touring the world. But early on in my journey, my skills didn't match my ambition. I figured it was better to dream about something more realistic.

My instinct was to think smaller, until my friend hit me with this perspective.

It made me think about why I'd let a dream die before I even tried, and why I thought I needed to know everything before starting.

The whole point of starting is to be at the beginning of a journey that will unfold into something greater than you could ever imagine.

And so instead of thinking I needed to have it all figured out, I took the smallest step that felt realistic and doable. I bought a $100 keyboard from Amazon, with no clue how to use it.

I still remember pressing the keys for the first time. It didn't sound pretty. In fact, I was glad I was home alone. But it did spark something within me. With every note I played, I realized my dream of music was in my hands.

While I don't have music out in the world yet and am still many steps away from touring, I'm further than I ever could've imagined. I've acquired all the skills I didn't have at the start to make this dream a reality.

If you've made it this far, I like to believe you're a dreamer like me.

Your aspirations are calling you forward, but you've been talking yourself out of it. You've been thinking that you don't know enough to take your first step.

Through my journey with music, I've learned that you don't need to know much to lean into your dreams. You just need to try before telling yourself "no."
