The more unpredictable your future, the bigger it will become.
But we typically want control over our environment and to know what will happen. This can be as simple as ordering the same cup of coffee, parking in the same spot when you go to the store, and following the same gym routine every single week.
We find what feels good, and then we never shift it. It's like we become statues within a life that's ever-evolving.
This makes me think of when I was getting ready to go to college, and, for the first time, I was thinking about what I wanted my future to become. Instead of letting it unfold naturally, I said I wanted to go to Cal State Fullerton, get my finance degree, and then become a financial analyst to make a good-looking paycheck.
While I was aiming "big" in my mind, I was aiming smaller than what was actually possible. Sure, it made me feel safe trying my best to control exactly what my future would become, but it was a limitation in disguise.
When I set that vision for myself, it was what I thought was possible behind the fears, self-limiting beliefs, and stories that limited me.
But let's not forget that we live in a universe defined by infinity. While our brains might have limits, the universe does not.
When we choose to live a predictable life and control the outcomes of our choices, we close ourselves off from possibilities outside our plan.
When we choose to aim for an unpredictable future, pursuing what we desire without attaching to outcomes, we create space for the universe's infinite plan to take place.
I like to see it as life handing you a gift every year. You don't know what's inside, but just like the excitement you felt as a kid opening a gift, you're in awe of what you receive as you open it.
After I graduated from college, I found myself counting down the minutes of work every day because I loathed my finance job. I realized my predictable plan landed me somewhere I wasn't happy. So, I decided to make a shift.
I threw out the traditional five-year plan, let go of all outcomes, and devoted myself to just allowing the universe to show me where it wanted to take me.
Whatever life put on my path, I gave it all of me, leaving a piece of my soul in it. I felt an inner freedom like never before, as if I had grown wings and was flying for the first time.
It's been a while since I reflected on that journey, but today marks the five years since I proposed to my wife, Nicolle, in Seattle. I was journaling this morning and thinking back to that 26-year-old version of myself who practiced the coveted knee drop at least 10 times before doing it for real.
If that version of myself knew that he was going to be a full-time author, living abroad with his wife while pursuing music professionally, he'd, for lack of a better phrase, lose his shit.
I don't have some superpower. I just decided to trade my predictable future for an unpredictable one. It was only then that the universe's infinite plan for me could unfold.
I finally got out of the way.
Can you think of something in your life that you're gripping onto and trying to control? Maybe a goal, an outcome, a relationship? What might come from loosening your grip just enough?
I understand it might feel scary to choose the unpredictable life. But the alternative is falling short of what you're capable of experiencing, and realizing it once it's too late to make a change.
Your favorite coffee order can stay the same, but consider letting your future be unpredictable to create space for your own infinite plan.
Book recommendation of the week
The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer
This book was one of the most helpful tools when I started to aim for an unpredictable future. It walked me through how to untether myself from my own limitations and let life open up. If you want to walk through doors you never knew possible, this book will help you find them.
